Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Ulcers of The Stomach

Causes & Symptoms

When skin surface or mucus lining is breached, an ulcer occurs which heals quickly. Persons with dominant tendency to Vata (wind) are generally the Victims. When Vata dosha (vitiation of wind) surfaces, and predominates tow types of ulcers, viz.

Peptic ulcer

Duodenallilceraccur.

Peptic ulcers occur in the stomach whereas duodenal ulcers occur in the duodenum which is a link between the jeujenum and stomach. Bile and pancreatijuices are released into the duodenum so as to mix up with the (permeated) food.

Symptoms of colic and duodenal ulcer are quite common hence difficult to deduce, but pain is a common symptom to both. Pain occurs during the course of churning of food and subsides when food has been digested or fresh food is ingested. But, if the ulcer is too deep, the pain may continue even after food has been digested. Due to impaired digestion, there may be gradual loss of weight and mental agitation. When bleeding occurs either with the stools or from the mouth, it signals warning when patient should be hospitalised where blood transfusion may be required. There may be eructations followed by vomiting of ingesta and pulse may slow down, indicating fall in blood pressure which must be restored to its normal level.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Gastric ulcers can be controlled by Sukumara Ghrita - 2 TSP with warm water milk twice daily, on empty stomach. If the patient is unable to digest fats (ghee etc), medicine should be given with warm water. The prescribed dose may have to be modified, depending on digestive capacity of the patient. Hence, one may start with TSP or 1 TSP, then gradually increasing to even 6 TSP daily, if patient's digestive power permits. Moderate pain in stomach ulcers can be controlled by Shankha Bhasma but severe and excruciating pains needs Maha Shankha Vati. dosage to be administered must be decided by a physician.

Geneally, hardly medicine is required in case of duodenal or stomach ulcers as, by avoiding and abstaining from hot foods drinks and diagreeable foods, cure can be had. But, if pain subsides by aid of medicines only, the treatment must be continued for some more weeks, of course with usual safeguards and abstentions, after pain has fully subsided. In allopathy, cold milk is considered as a specific measure to overcome the problem.
